As the purse is emptied, the heart is filled...

I love quirky finds. These top quirky I think? This is what I get up too when it gets to 3pm in the office and the work runs dry. This is also the typical sign of payday looming...

My Current Obsession - Ella Henderson

From X-Factor Contestant to Popstar conquering the world with her debut album, I talk about why Ella Henderson is my current obsession.

I’d downloaded Ella Henderson’s album one day on iTunes with a spare voucher I had, I hadn’t heard much apart from her debut single, Ghost, so I thought it was the right time to have a listen. Of course the album kind of fell on the back burner as I continued to obsess over Miley Cyrus’s ‘Bangerz’ album (which I still love to this day).

I was on the train to work one day when I had my iPod on shuffle when I started listening to a really deep, rich and soulful sound. With deep beats and riffs running up and down, I didn’t know who I was listening too. Looking at my iPod I found I was listening to to one Miss Henderson.

I listened to track after track carefully, each song having that continuous wholesome but bold sound. It mainly had slow paced song with some catchy tracks which you wouldn’t expect amongst the ‘love songs’. Her album, Chapter One, is an amazing collection of songs for her to get noticed by. She has everything from being empowering to being heartbroken and finally being able to conquer the world.

Back tracking, Ella first appeared on the X-Factor in 2012 and although she only came 6th (controversially) she went on to sign with Simon Cowell’s record label, Syco Music. Keeping it quiet for a while, she exploded back onto the scene with her debut single, Ghost. The track was written and produced with OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder when she was the mere age of 18 and it was on every single radio station in the UK, thanks to it’s rich and bold start.

Then soon came her album, released in the UK, Chapter One. Filled with a mixture of tracks, Henderson explained ‘"I wanted each song to explain a situation, and then [for] the next song [to] kind of get you through that’. The album was met with positive reviews and Ella was pinpointed to being the next big thing, as she set her sights for the USA.

It took me a while to get into Ella’s album. Mainly because each song had to be listened to carefully because as she said, she wanted each song to explain something and then wanted the next song to be a follow up. I just adore the sound of her voice, it’s definitely a new fresh sound with a heavy richness of soul music. It bounces from happy to sad to content to empowered. Henderson has a real mix of songs and doesn’t just sing about how heavy her heart is, but how much of a good person she is and how she is better and will be better than another girl. She sings about her childlike state and then quickly sings about her inspiration and love of music.

My stand out tracks are:
Empire - A brave and bold, loud and demanding opening to the album.
Pieces - A song that builds and builds, till you just want to dance around your room.
The First Time - The song that gets you through the break up, the ‘I am and will be better’ song.
Billie Holliday - The funnest, liveliest track. Full of confidence and bounce.
1996 - A humble recollection of her beginning and progression into growing up.

As I said she is and will be a force of nature. I can’t wait to see what’s next for her and her career. Asides from her own songs, she does a great cover of a song. Ranging from Cher to Drake and most recently, Sam Smith (See below for an amazing cover of, I'm Not The Only One). She is putting her stamp on things and is getting bigger and better. I look at her and think of a true woman, she is gorgeously curvaceous and has impeccable style to match her cool and collected tones.

She is currently getting ready to support Take That on tour but I’m more excited to see her head up her own tour one day!

And that’s why she is my current obsession! Any thoughts on Ella?

A Week In Pictures

A positive and hard working week; here goes:

1. Eating healthy. Do you ever type that into google a lot of the times and try to find amended recipes of your favourite foods, but you know, healthier? I tried doing that but to be honest I'm far happier just adding a little less salt and just switching a few ingredients. I just cut out the holy god, Butter, and added a few more green things in and I've lost another 6lbs this week. Feeling quite proud...and craving cake, so not much has changed.

2. Our father who art in heaven, Barbra be thy name. I have an unholy obsession with one 'Queen B'. I received this coffee table book for Christmas and have only just finished it. I have a couple of Barbra books, but this one is called 'Streisand: In The Camera Eye' and in the camera eye she is. I look beyond her infamous nose and see her true beauty, which is on every single page.

3.  I have macaron fever. I was browsing through some old pictures and found this one from my first macaron making class. These ones are strawberry with strawberry jam buttercream. The infamous story goes, I attented my first ever class here, alone, and it turns out it was a valentines day themed class  and of course, everybody was a couple. Everybody except me. You couldn't make this stuff up.

4. I had quite a good surprise this week when I popped on a dress that was quite tight last year and found it just slipped on this week. This proved to me this whole 'cutting down' thing was working. Sure it was no bodycon/bandage dress, but it was bright and bold and made me feel great for wearing it. Even better, it was a find from Primark!

5. This week I was really trying to look for new music so I could keep up with the kids but as expected, I was drawn back to my roots for my love of Motown, Soul and Jazz music. I found this Marvin Gaye vinyl on ebay this week and it was an absolute steal. I love this album, the ranges of songs are amazing and it features the infamous track, What's Going On.

6. I've got a new found love for Caitlin Moran. I found this book a couple of days ago and I'm already halfway through. It's brilliant and honestly funny, it's embarrissingly forward and painstakingly relatable. Moran has no qualms and states whatever she thinks and says it how it should be said.

My Favourite Leading Ladies

I love the oscars. I love the history and the iconic element of it. I more than anything adore the women who have been awarded this awards. Each actress has a great film behind the golden statuette and have their own style that goes with their iconic award.

1. Judy Garland

I count Judy Garland as a true icon of mine. Despite how 'tragic' her life was made out to be, she was a powerful force who starred in films since the age of 13. Despite losing out to Grace Kelly in 1955 for her iconic film, A Star Is Born, she was awarded a 'Academy Juvenile Award' in 1940, which was an award for perfomers under the age of eighteen for their "outstanding contributions to screen entertainment".

2. Barbra Streisand
'Hello Gorgeous', were the first words out of Barbra's mouth when she accepted her award in 1968 for Funny Girl. Her win was a first in oscar history when she joint tied with Katharine Hepburn. Dressed in a Arnold Scaasi peter pan collared suit, there seemed to be a bit of an outcry when the papers reported 'STREISAND, NUDE UNDER SEE-THROUGH OUTFIT!'. Streisand later admitted “I didn't realize the outfit was so see-through,”. Yes Barbra, I adore you even more.

3. Diane Keaton

Annie Hall is my favourite film. It's all about unconventional, unfortunate realistic love. Despite being cast in Woody Allen films before, Keaton scored an oscar in 1977 for playing the kooky, clumsy, head in the clouds Annie. Compared to other extravagent dresses, Keaton played it incredibly casual in a blazer/skirt and a floral broach. The outfit later got listed as a 'fuck it oscar outfit' - which is as it should be. The oscar was for her work, not her plaid scarf.

4. Liza Minnelli
Once dubbed Hollywood's Princess, born the daughter of Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli, Liza grabbed her oscar in 1972 for Cabaret. Minnell's Sally Bowles is an iconic character made up of green eyeshadow, suspenders, legs over chairs and plenty of purple lipstick. Minnelli wore a striking yellow suit made by Halston, who of course the studio 54 Minnelli was great friends with.

5. Audrey Hepburn

The voice. That face. Those eyebrows. Audrey had it all. Crowned with an oscar in 1954 for Roman Holiday, Hepburn stated ' I'm truly, truly grateful and terribly happy'. She was precious when accepting her award. She was dressed in a classic Edith Head/Givenchy pearl white dress which has been replicated in many forms by other actresses at the show.

6. Vivien Leigh
Clark Gable fell for her. Marlon Brando screamed for her. Laurence Olivier made her his wife. Described as a ''consummate actress, hampered by beauty", Leigh was awarded Best Actress in 1939 for her role as southern belle Scarlett O'Hara, Leigh shot to stardom and was placed on the list of greatest female movie stars of all time.

These are only just a couple of leading ladies and there will be many more, but these are a few of my favourites. They are all deserving in their own rights and have left an influential impact for years to come.

Do you have any favourite oscar winners? Leave a comment!

A Week In Pictures

What a fun week it was. A lot's been happening, and here goes:

1. Who doesn't love milkshakes? Well people who are lactose intolerant, but I do. Especially this treat ar Smiths of Smithfields. This beauty is a Bourbon Biscuit & Cream milkshake and it tastes superb. They also have Strawberry, Chocolate, Banana & Banoffee, all £4. Smiths of Smithfields

2. Macarons! Someone once said they were the new cupcakes, but that person was probably mental. I recently went to Ganache Macaron, where I learnt how to conjure up these bites. These ones I made are sicilian lemon and I hopefully plan to do a post about how to make them soon, so watch out. Ganache Macaron

3. Is it just me or am I the only one who thinks its been fifty shades fever this week? I've personally never read the books but one of my favourite magazines, interviewed the two main stars this week. I've gotta admit I'm probably just going to see the film when they show in on Valentines Day in 2017, mainly because one of the lines is 'I'm fifty shades of fucked up'...really? Glamour Magazine

4. I received a satchel for Christmas last year and only used it for the first time yesterday. It's what I call an 'occasion bag', one that you only use for important things. I was going to get my initials stitched on it but then I was quick to realise if I ever get stalked, I'm an easy giveaway. Zatchels

5. BEAUTIFUL. Literally, this is the show I went to see. I've spoken (gone fan girl crazy) about this musical and it's star, Carole King, in this post, but this programme was from the show yesterday. Now showing at the Aldwych Theatre, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical

6. I'm not a dieter. I'm not up for detoxing or replacing bread for supplements. I'm simply cutting down. After a weigh in today, I've lost 6 pounds. This is the first week I've been taking the cut down seriously, so I was pretty pleased. All I've done is reduce portions, cut back on the gin, bit of exercise and amped up the dancing at Zumba. I'm also following the Fit Girls Guide, it's about £16 and is a 28 day programme of simple tips, exercise help and some recipes you can follow. It's not forceful but encouraging. Fit Girls Guide

A Day In London

It's Valentines day today right? Of course I'm right. Either that or I'm completely unaware of the day. I'm aware though, aware of all the couples on the central line licking face or of all the dine in for £20 meals from M&S (which could totally pass as a meal for one, just saying). I've never really been bothered about V-Day, understandably because I have neither a boyfriend nor have I ever had a boyfriend to 'celebrate' this glorious day full of helium balloons and strewn petals, which is enough to make me gag, even more than the face lickers on the tube.

So who better to spend this day with than my invisible 5'7 boyfriend with a well cut beard and preferably specs? My mother of course. The light of my life, the 5'2 bobbed, ray ban wearing spectacled woman in all her Liz Earle glory.

Even though I drag myself up to the city everyday for that mudane task called work, today was a Saturday, meaning yes, I will drink gin and yes I will drink lots of it. Before that though, breakfast called. Me and Susan headed to Smiths of Smithfields where the smell of bloodied meat covered in sawdust loomed and screwed up lottery notes loitered the floor outside Fabric Nightclub. I wanted to be classy and order a Bloody Mary, but then I realised that was way grown up and more importantly, I don't like tomato juice. We dished over eggs and bourbon biscuit and cream milkshakes and I moaned about my single exsistence whilst mother told me all the reasons to not rush, 'learn from me' she said 'the right person will come along'...yeah mum, in 199never.

Next stop was too the 5th happiest place on earth, asides from IKEA, Costco, ASOS's nightwear section, and Subway at 1.30am after you've been out, reeking of vodka & red bull. Primrose Bakery is a tiny haven of cupcake and baked goodness. Located in Covent Garden, it's as cute as they come and you know it's good in there because you can smell the gingerbread loaf from outside. Today mother treated us to some cupcakes which included Malteser and Cookie Dough. She dragged me away somehow as my saliva slid down the cake cabinet displays.

Hungry right? I know, sorry.

So then...and this is where it gets exciting, I went to see a musical that I've literally been dying to see since 2013. How this is possible I don't know, seeing as it only came to Broadway last year but you know when you have that deep intact feeling of 'for gods sake, make a musical of this so I can have my dreams fullfilled' well they made the musical, and godammit, they made a good one. Beautiful, The Carole King Musical is a gift from god and fuck, it was amazing. Yes I said fuck, emphasis on it.

I know it was that good because I've wrote a whole seperate post on it, but like don't read it if you get bored to tears because it's just me crushing hard on Carole king. Underline Crushing.

After the show, I went home where I was surrounded with yet more people on the tube with flowers and uncomfortable closeness and hand holding. I wondered if my inner introvert was just really acting out on today of all days or if I was just immune to affection? Still curiously wondering.

It turns out spending February 14th, a Saturday, National Ferris Wheel Day (because thats's what it really is) with my mum was what I actually needed. As well as the cupcakes made of pure sugar and Jesus's love, the Greenwalls tins of Gin & Pink Grapefruit Tonic, an episode of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and a musical about an inspiring queen of music was the perfect v-day. V for Victory because these cupcakes were victoriously delicious.

Till Next Time!

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical

I know you shouldn't always say 'This was the best day of my life' because sometimes you should have higher goals, like you know getting married or being able to eat a 12 inch subway, so I'll say this was the best day of my life so far.

I'm a little bit obsessed with someone. That someone being Carole King. Who? did I just sense someone say? Who? Oh just Carole King who's written over 400 songs, had her first hit at 16, made an album which stayed in the charts for 17 weeks in the 1970's and you know, is a music ledgend. I get why you may not know her, she was more of a 40's/50's/60's/70's gal but just happened to dominate music with her amazing melodies and her raspy mellow voice. I could gush over Carole all day, but first let me tell you about a musical, which was made about her life. THANK YOU JESUS.

 This is Carole. Glorious Carole.

A brief synopsis for you all. Carole wants to write songs, not be overly famous, just write down all the beautiful things she has to say and for the world to hear them, not teach like her mother suggests. Lucky for Carole she plays a song for a record producer who tells her he'll buy her songs and give it to another band, such as The Drifters. Carole is okay with this because all she wants to do is write songs and that makes her happy. Enter Gerry Goffin, who she later marries, who just also happens to be a lyricist and can fit his words to match Carole's melodies. Perfect right? They marry, kids come along, they sell hit songs and live blissfully.

Ah...if only it was that easy. They go head to head with their best friends and lyricist partners Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, who are equally as good as Carole and Gerry. The pair's roll out songs for The Shirelles, Bobby Vee, The Righteous Brothers and later, Dolly Parton. It's all well and good until Gerry, Carole's beloved husband, doesn't want to live the comfy suburb life with Carole and wants more on his plate than he deserves. I won't give much away but you see Carole go through tough times but eventually she picks herself up and writes an record which captivates the world, Tapestry.

Again, I don't want to spoil it because it all has to be seen to be believed and enjoyed. To start, the sets, costumes, the music is something I can't even go into without sobbing and overall, the actors. King is played by Katie Brayben, who is a gift. She is the pure essence of Carole and when she took her bow at the end, I felt myself getting choked up because I felt I was watching the real Carole King. Goffin is played by Alan Morrissey, who made me hate him but love him so much (at one point I even mumbled, what a dickhead, in a quiet theatre...yeah) but he makes up the expection I had of the pair.

I just loved this show. I left feeling as if I had been watching the real Carole King sing through her songbook history and better yet, it was so accurate to her book she wrote. Every song she sang and every word was meant and this show just, well, there are not enough words to describe this triumph of a musical.

King is a extraordinary woman. Her talent is everlasting and influential, she is the eptiome of a humble person with an amazing gift. As Carole says, and I now live by:

You've got to get up every morning with a smile on your face
And show the world all the love in your heart
Then people gonna treat you better
You're gonna find, yes, you will
That you're beautiful as you feel

Thank you Carole.

New Year, New Start...

I decided in 2014 to make a big change in my life so 2015 would be a great year. This change would be to attend university to study Journalism. I made this decision whilst sobbing over a bag of maltesers, contemplating where my life was going. So with a few wise words from my mother and a ton of prospectuses ordered, I have officially sent my UCAS application off.

In 2012 I was offered a unconditional from East Anglia university to studio Media production and at the time it seemed like the best thing in the world, but my head wasn't really in it and the world of work seemed more interesting...how wrong I could of been. So with 2 years passed, I have to say writing a personal statement at 17 seemed like the easiest thing in the world - I was basically blagging and selling the skills I didn't have. Fast forward to 2015, writing a personal statement, still on no skills, is even worse. The more I re-read it the more I sounded like I was trying to get blood out of a stone. Luckily I managed to complete it in one day and sent it off the same evening, then I bought about 6 cupcakes and ate my emotions.

I have applied to

  • The University of Kent - Journalism & News Production
  • The University of Falmouth - Journalism & Creative Writing
  • The University of Sheffield - Journalism
  • The University of Sheffield Hallam - Journalism Studies
  • The University of Brighton - Multimedia Broadcast Journalism

They all sound pretty same-y but excited doesn't come close right now. I don't mean to wish the year away but I can't wait to see if I'm lucky enough to get any offers and then hopefully start in September.

University at the ripe old age of 21 seems daunting to me, but you never know these things till you try. I don't think of this as a scape goat or a fall back option, I just happen to have too much to say and want to learn how to write it all down properly.

Till next time,

Ellie

Dry January

So, you know when you joke that drinking is a hobby and then you do that laugh as if to say 'BUT I'M NOT AN ALCOHOLIC!..hahaha' but then you kind think, oh fuck, I do class Gin as a friend. I do love going out for a drink, preferably a £7.99 bottle of Prosecco after a hard week at work, ensuring you wake up the next day unsure of what kind of sandwich you made the other night. I wanted 2015 to be a year of change but what better way was there then to call it quits on the united front of gin lovers.

Cancer Research UK had been harping on about Dry January for a while and the thought of doing it made me wonder how I would possibly cope, so I decided not to do it. However after a bit of a guilt talk and the weekly £7.99 saving, I figured it would be best to try it.

I signed myself up on the 1st Jan, probably still drunk from the NYE party I went to before (where I drunkenly cooked 12 nuggets and they still tasted fab; they were consumed with flutes of Aldi prosecco and the best of Donna Summer in the background) and I'd say my biggest supporter was my mother, who told me of all the great benefits I would reap from this.
They are:

  1. Your skin will look great!
  2. Imagine all the money you will save!
  3. You have no friends anyway, so you can't go to the pub!
The last one, I admit, was pretty spot on from Susan. I'm an Introvert and a half, so the latter really did apply.

Over the last 31 days sure I have saved money and mum was right, my skin was doing pretty good but I have to admit, after a long week of sitting at your desk dreaming of 5.30pm, a Bombay Sapphire wouldn't go amiss. Part of the fundraising included a pack that Cancer Research UK sent me. It contained a wristband, beer mats (ironic really), fundraising sheet and some plastic cards in which you could hand out if anyone was willing to fund your non drinking.

However, this was all for a good cause, and I raised a great amount of money which I fully admit I'm glad I didn't spend shaking off the hangover blues the next day. I'm happy to say I tried something new year this, not entirely sure that I'll be rushing back next year, but it's for a good cause!

Wishlist #2

Wishlist #2

I really got into the swing of not doing any work last week and searching for all the things I wanted and yet, still could not afford because I'm still buying organic soups I just don't need (but I do need and carrot and parnsip, it's well nice). With Valentines day coming up and my single ass still single, I may have to purchase something of this list that my future boyfriend would totally buy me.

1.  I'm still in that stage of life where I consider M&S expensive, to be honest even Primark is expensive, but when I go in M&S it's usually for christmas food or I just got paid. I saw this bag in look magazine and have seen it in store a few times, I think I'll get this because I'll look classy as f- and if I cut back on the excessive make up wipe buying, this will soon be mine.

2. I always think saying you love collecting vinyl records is such an 'indie/hipster' thing to do, but after actually receiving a record player as a gift I decided it was time to get in on the action. I love the movie Juno and the soundtrack is incredibly good. It features Cat Power, Moldy Peaches, The Kinks and Ellen Page and Michael Cera perform as well. Literally, music to my ears.

3 I work about 10 minutes from The Hummingbird Bakery in Spitalfields and it's honestly one of the hardest things, to not be able to go there everyday and order up, you know, everything. The cakes are amazing and what's better is that on Fridays, even you retweet 'treat a friend friday' you get a free red velvet cupcake with anything you purchase - Win. I own all the previous hummingbird cookbooks and the recipe is exact and there are so many good bakes to choose from.

4 Another ASOS nightwear find! ASOS are really stepping up their game with nightwear, and I can vouch that their pieces are super comfy. This one has sweets imprinted all over it, yes top to bottom, and who wouldn't want that?

5. Hooray for Tatty Devine and the marvellous designs they produce. They have necklaces to earrings, broaches to personalised stuff. This is one of my faves on the website, swallow earrings. They look so nice and pretty and you'd for sure stand out wearing these.

6. THIS. I'm currently anti-valentines because you know I'm single and have been and will be - how cliche does this sound for a boyfriend-less 20 year old? I wanna buy this card and send it to myself on the 14th, because as my mother says 'I CAN AND I WILL' - she also once said, 'drink a lot of gin and just see who becomes the most attractive first'. Wise woman.

7. All hail benefit for another amazing looking mascara in which I really want it and will beg to have it in my collection. I've been using they're real mascara for the past year and I have basically have Liz Taylor eyes (sort of...). The design of this product looks fab and I've read a lot of reviews about how you don't use a lot and basically become a mascara model and get married and have loads of kids once you put it on*
*slightly exaggerated

Till next week!
